A-134-1 Voltage Controlled Panner/Crossfader

A-134-1 ist ein universell einsetzbares Umblendmodul. Es kann sowohl als spannungsgesteuerte Panning- als auch als Crossfading-Einheit eingesetzt werden. Bei der Panning-Anwendung wird ein Audio-Signal wird auf zwei verschiedene Ausgänge spannungsgesteuert umgeblendet. Wird das Modul als Crossfader genutzt werden zwei verschiedene Eingangssignale spannungsgesteuert auf einen gemeinsamen Ausgang umgeblendet. Es sind aber auch Mischformen der beiden Funktionen möglich.

Im Prinzip besteht das Modul aus 2 hochwerten linearen VCAs (aufgebaut mit CEM3381/PA381 bis April 2013, bzw. SSM2164 ab Mai 2013), die über eine Steuerspannung gegensinnig gesteuert werden. Je weiter der eine VCA öffnet, um so weiter schließt der andere VCA. Das Modul besitzt 2 Audio-Eingänge mit Abschwächer, die den beiden VCAs zugeordnet sind. Steckt in der zweiten Eingangsbuchse kein Stecker, so wird das erste Audiosignal auch für den zweiten VCA verwendet, da die Buchsen entsprechend "normalisiert" sind. Es stehen 3 Audio-Ausgänge zur Verfügung: Left Output (VCA1), Right Output (VCA2) und Mix. Bei der Anwendung als Panning-Einheit werden die beiden Ausgänge Left Out und Right Out verwendet. Bei der Anwendung als Crossfader wird Mix Output als Ausgangssignal verwendet.

Mit dem A-134-1 können z.B. spannungsgesteuerte Stereo-Umblendeffekte (VCA-Ausgänge auf linken/rechten Stereokanal geben), Mono-Umblendeffekte (z.B. zwischen 2 verschiedenen Audiosignalen umblenden) oder eine Mischung aus beiden Funktionen realisiert werden.

Die Umblendfunktion kann manuell und über zwei externe Steuerspannungen (davon eine mit Abschwächer) gesteuert werden. Als Steuersignale können z.B. LFOs (A-145,A-146,A-147), Hüllkurven (A-140, A-141, A-142, A-119), Random (A-118), Theremin (A-178), Fußregler (A-177) oder die Spannung eines MIDI-CV-Interfaces (A-190 oder A-191) verwendet werden. Die Umblendfunktion wird über 2 Leuchtdioden optisch angezeigt.

Hinweise:

Die Version 1 des A-134-1 ist nur für die Verarbeitung von Audiosignalen geeignet, nicht für langsam veränderliche Steuersignale, da die Ein- und Ausgänge wechselspannungsgekoppelt sind. Diese Version wurde bis April 2013 produziert und ist erkennbar an dem verwendeten VCA-Baustein CEM3381 (8-poliges IC, beschriftet CEM3381 oder PA381).
Die Version 2 des A-134-1 ist auch für langsam veränderliche Steuersignale geeignet, da die Ein- und Ausgänge gleichspannungsgekoppelt sind. Diese Version wird ab Mai 2013 produziert und ist erkennbar an dem verwendeten VCA-Baustein SSM2164 (16-poliges IC, beschriftet SSM2164 oder V2164).

Die folgenden VCAs sind auch in der Lage langsam veränderliche Steuersignale zu verarbeiten:

• A-130/A-131 (nur die neuen Versionen mit CA3080/SSM2164/THAT, nicht die älteren Versionen mit CEM3381/CEM3382/PA381)

• A-132-1 (alle Versionen)

• A-134-2 (alle Versionen)

• A-135-1 (nur die neue Version mit SSM2164/V2164, nicht die älteren Versionen mit CEM3381/PA381)

A-134-1 is a voltage controlled universal panning and/or crossfader module. If the module is used a voltage controlled Panning device one audio signal is panned to two different outputs.  If the module is used a voltage controlled Crossfader two audio signals are mixed to one common output. The module enables even compositions of both functions.

The module contains two linear high quality VCAs (made with CEM3381/PA381 until April 2013, SSM2164 from May 2013). VCA2 works in the opposite direction of VCA1 i.e. the more VCA1's loudness increases the more VCA2's loudness decreases. The panning or crossfading is adjusted with a control knob (manual control) and by two external control voltages, one equipped with an attenuator. Suitable control voltage sources are e.g. LFOs (A-145, A-146, A-147), envelope signals (A-140, A-141, A-142, A-119), random (A-118), Theremin (A-178) or a voltage coming from an MIDI-to-CV-Interface (A-190, A-191). The panning/crossfading is displayed with 2 LEDs.

A-134-1 has an audio input with attenuator for each VCA. If the audio input of VCA2 is not used the audio input of VCA1 is connected with audio in of VCA 2, i.e. the sockets are "normalled". The module has three audio outputs:  Left Output (VCA1), Right Output ( VCA2) and Mix. For Panning applications the outputs Left Out and Right Out are used. If the module is used as as Crossfader the Mix Output functions as output.

Module A-134-1 enables voltage controlled stereophonic panning effects (one audio signal distributed to two outputs), crossfading effects (two audio inputs mixed to one audio output with voltage controlled loudness proportion) and combinations of both effects.

Remarks:

Version 1 of module A-134-1 is able to process only audio signals. It cannot be used to process slowly varying control voltages as the in/ouputs are AC coupled. Version 1 has been manufactured until about April 2013 and can be identified by the CEM3381 VCA circuit (8 pin circuit labelled CEM3381 or PA381).
Version 2 of module A-134-1 is able to process even slowly varying control voltages as the in/ouputs are DC coupled. Version 2 is manufactured from about May 2013 and can be identified by the SSM2164 VCA circuit (16 pin circuit labelled SSM2164 or V2164).

These VCAs are able to process even slowly varying control voltages:

• A-130/A-131 (only the new versions with CA3080 or SSM2164 or THAT, not the old versions with CEM3381/PA381/CEM3382)

• A-132-1 (all versions)

• A-134-2 (all versions)

• A-135-1 (only the new version with SSM2164/V2164, not the old versions with CEM3381/PA381)
