Das Modul A-191 ist eine Kombination aus MIDI-CV-Interface und Shepard-Generator. Beide Einheiten nutzen einige der Bedienkomponenten sowie die Ausgänge gemeinsam; mit einem Wahlschalter wird festgelegt, ob das A-191 als MIDI-CV-Interface oder Shepard-Generator arbeitet.
Beim MIDI-CV-Interface sind 13 der 16 Steuerspannungsausgänge bestimmten MIDI-Controllern fest zugeordnet (z.B. Modulation-Wheel, Volume, Pitch-Wheel, Aftertouch, etc.). Die auf einem einstellbaren MIDI-Kanal eintreffenden Controler-Werte werden in Steuerspannungen im Bereich 0 V bis +5 V umgesetzt. An den restlichen 3 Buchsen liefert ein interner LFO die Wellenformen Sägezahn, Dreieck und Rechteck; dabei wird der LFO von der MIDI-Clock synchronisiert.

Beim sogenannten Shepard-Generator handelt es sich um einen Modulationsoszillator, der je 8 phasenverschobene Dreieck- und Sägezahnsignale generiert. Damit lassen sich in Verbindung mit entsprechend vielen anderen Modulen (mindestens 4 VCAs und 4 VCOs oder VCFs oder VCPs) bestimmte psycho-akustische Phänomene realisieren (ständig ansteigende/abfallende Töne/Filterungen/Phasings, sog. Barberpole-Effekte). Auch in Verbindung mit der Vocoder-Synthese-Einheit können interessante Klang-Effekte erzielt werden.

Achtung! A-191 benötigt zusätzlich eine +5V-Versorgungsspannung mit 50mA (z.B. den 5V-low-cost-Adapter)

Die DIY/OEM-Elektronik MTV16 kann die Funktionen des Moduls teilweise ersetzen (Midi-to-CV-Funktionen). Allerdings ist MTV16 ein DIY/OEM-Produkt, d.h. kein komplettes Modul sondern nur eine bestückte und geprüfte Leiterplatte.
Der Kunde müsste ggf. eine passende Frontplatte mit Buchsen selbst ergänzen. Ein Betrieb an der A-100-Stromversorgung wäre möglich (nur +12V benötigt).

Module A-191 is a combination of a MIDI-CV interface and a Shepard Generator. Most of the controls, indicators and in/outputs have a double function; there is a switch which toggles between the two sets of functions.
In use as a MIDI-CV interface, 13 of the 16 control voltage outputs are dedicated to sending voltages converted from a particular MIDI controller (such as Mod Wheel, Volume, Pitch Wheel, Aftertouch, etc.). Controller messages on your chosen MIDI channel are converted into voltages in a range from 0 to 5 V. The other three sockets output an internal LFO generated in sync with MIDI clock, in three waveforms: sawtooth, triangle and rectangle.

In use as a so-called Shepard Generator, the sockets output eight different phases each of a triangle and sawtooth wave. The Shepard Generator creates in combination with other modules (VCO's, VCF's, VCP's, VCA's, Mixers) psycho-acoustic so-called Barberpole effects like never ending rising (or falling) phasings (with VCPs), filterings (with VCF's) or tones (with VCOs). To create the Barberpole effect you need the required additional modules in your system. For a good Barberpole effect we recommend a minimum of 4 VCP's (or VCF's or VCO's) and 4 VCA's (linear types A-130 or A-132). With 8 modules instead of 4 the sound becomes more smooth and tight.

All A-191 settings can be saved into non-volatile memory.

Attention: A-191 requires an additional +5V power supply with 50mA e.g. the low-cost 5V adapter !

The DIY/OEM electronic kit MTV16 can be used to replace some of the functions of the module (the Midi-to-CV functions). But MTV16 is a so-called DIY/OEM product, i.e. not a complete module but only an assembled and tested pc board. One would have to add a suitable front panel with sockets. It's possible to run the MTV16 with the A-100 power supply (only +12V required).
